B'nai B'rith International is the "original" organization for what became the Israel lobby in America. BBI's first lobbying campaigns targeted Russia through appeals to the U.S. president to cut trade ties and condition U.S. relations with Russia on the Tsar's treatment of the country's Jewish communities. BBI later spun off the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League.

BBI no longer provides the broad range of social welfare services that once aided waves of Jewish immigrant communities, such as English language classes, life insurance and other integration assistance. BBI, which had its pension fund services bailed out by the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation in 2012 (when the IAO’s pension assets were determined to have only $30 million to cover $56 million in liabilities). BBI is no longer a major lobby for the Israel affinity ecosystem, though BBI fundraising appeals claim otherwise.

In September 2016 BBI's letterhead asserted that the much-diminished organization was still "The Global Voice of the Jewish Community." BBI appealed for donations on the basis of the success of its "Cuban Jewish Relief Project" and that "the new geopolitical situation will allow us to expand our efforts in the coming year and create new programs to create a deeper impact on a wider swath of Cuba's population."
